Small Towns
As I was walking this afternoon, I was thinking about our experiences on this trip. We are small town people. We don’t like huge cities and are much happier out in the country away from crowds. If you read our bio you know we like the backroads and not the interstates for just that reason. I love to drive through the small towns in America and stop when I can to experience their towns.
Fort Davis and Marfa are two good examples of American small towns that are being hard hit by the economic downturns we’ve been enduring the last few years. As we walked and drove around the towns, we noticed how many businesses were closed either for days at a time or permanently. Those that are open have very limited hours and close on Monday and Tuesday. Fort Davis is down to 2-3 restaurants that are open and several fellow campers have commented about it. Lots of shops have also closed on the main street. As Americans I think we need to put a concerted effort into supporting these small towns especially those near scenic areas, parks and such. It’s sad to see what used to be vibrant small towns slowly turning into ghost towns before our eyes! Let's get out and support them with our patronage!
