Rear Jack Issue

Rear Jack Issue

We had just finished leveling the RV when the error light kicked on and it displayed a right rear jack error. That’s the second time that we’ve seen that error. The first time it kept giving me problems but I could manually retract it for quite a while but at some point even that stopped. But we weren’t using the RV at the time so it wasn’t critical and we got it in to be fixed with a warranty problem on the Unity Board that controls virtually everything in these Grand Design models. As it turns out the warranty work on the board corrected the jack issue this time.

Now, however, it wouldn’t budge and my wife pointed out that it had a huge scrape down the side like there was a rock or something wedged in there. Since we were level, we went for dinner and I figured I’d research it over night and try to reset everything in the morning. In the morning, I tried to manually retract the right rear jack and got nothing but an error. I went ahead and manually retracted the jack with a cordless drill and socket which they said would reset the error but the system still wouldn’t “retract all”. I manually retracted the left rear jack after fighting with the system for a bit since it kept complaining about the right rear jack but finally relented to raise the other one. After that, I could raise the front to connect it to the truck and then hit the “retract all” that the system kept wanting and it brought the front up. I hoped that would take care of it and that at the next stop things would work right. The retract all was the reset the system supposedly needed according to the manual and online forums.

As I did my walk around the RV, I looked at the left side jack and noticed that the detent in the inner rail was pointed straight to the side where the scratch was on the other side. I went back to the right to check and I found that the detent on the inside portion was turned towards the back and not tracking along the detent in the outer portion as it was supposed to. I gave it a turn and it popped back into place. When we set up that night, I kept an eye on it to be sure it tracked down correctly and noticed that the natural twist given by the screw drive inside was trying to twist the inner portion to the rear. I kept it in place until the jack was solidly on the ground and it worked well. There was a long delay while the system kept blinking with a status of “checking to see if right rear jack is grounded” or something similar. It finally completed on its own, the system reset and we haven't seen the error since but I keep an eye on the rear jacks to be sure they track correctly.
